Kühne Foundation Provides IOM Iraq with Logistics & Supply Chain Management Training

IOM Deputy Director General Ambassador Laura Thompson Visits Iraq Mission
The Deputy Director General of the International Organization for Migration, Ambassador Laura Thompson, paid an official visit to the Iraq Mission this December. Over an intensive three-day tour, Ambassador Thompson visited Hubs in Baghdad and Erbil, as well as the IOM Iraq support cell in Amman, Jordan.

IOM Iraq Flash Report: IOM continues to support families displaced by military action along the Iraq-Iran border
July 2011 – IOM continues to support families displaced by the ongoing fighting between Iranian military forces and Iraqi Kurdish separatists. On July 27, IOM sent relief items to a further100 families living in a temporary camp in the village of Prdi Haso.

July 21, 2011 – Ongoing fighting between Iranian military forces and Iraqi Kurdish separatists has led to the displacement of hundreds of families living in villages near the Iraq-Iran border in the governorate of Sulaymaniyah.

Meeting with Ministry of Displacement and Migration Officials in Erbil
The IOM Head of Erbil Hub, Head of Baghdad Hub and Programme for Human Security and Stabilization (PHSS) Project Officer met today with officials from the Iraqi Ministry of Displacement and Migration (MoDM) in Erbil, including the Deputy Director of the Ministry and the MoDM Representative in the KRG. Plans for expanding cooperation between IOM and MoDM were discussed in detail, and both parties expressed their hope for continued partnership.

IOM representative meets with Dahuk Provincial Council
An IOM representative met with the Dahuk Provincial Council as part of an official UN delegation. IOM's activities in Dahuk and throughout Iraq were presented to the council, and further areas for IOM-government cooperation were discussed.

Meeting was held with officials from the University of Zakho
A meeting was held with officials from the University of Zakho, in the northern government of Dahuk, to discuss potential partnership opportunities between IOM and the university. The meeting was also attended by a delegation from the UNAMI Development and Humanitarian Support office (DHS).

PHSS Distribution in Ninewa
IOM delivered 25 sheep to beneficiary families living in the Shekhan district of Ninewa, under the mission's Programme for Human Security and Stabilization (PHSS). The sheep are an in-kind grant that the families can use to create a sustainable livelihood for themselves.

In-Kind Grants Distributed to PHSS Beneficiaries in Khabat, Erbil
IOM has distributed small business start-up kits to eight beneficiaries of the Programme for Human Security and Stabilization (PHSS) in Khabat, Erbil governorate. Four of the beneficiaries received motorcycles to start their own delivery services, while the others received the tools and equipment necessary to start a house painting business, a mobile phone shop and a grocery store. A representative from the Kurdistan Regional Government attended the distribution.

In-Kind Grants Distributed to PHSS Beneficiaries in Kalar, Sulaymaniyah
IOM has distributed in-kind grants to four beneficiaries of the Programme for Human Security and Stabilization (PHSS) in Kalar, Sulaymaniya. Based on the business plans they developed in cooperation with IOM staff, the beneficiaries received the equipment and training necessary to start a small business – in this case a grocery store and a motorcycle delivery service. The distribution was also attended by a representative from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Bureau of Migration and Displacement (BMD) and from the Office of the Governor of Sulaymaniya.
